The baskets are traditionally used for storing mealie meal and beer by people living in the Buhela region. Cow dung is smeared on the outside to make the vessels waterproof and a small lid is woven to stop the neck of the basket. A hole in the ground is used to lower the working area as the weavers work on the ground and not tables. The baskets are only woven by women.
During the rainy season (mid-December to mid-April) there are very few baskets available as the women have to farm. A medium sized basket takes about one week to make.
